Fears three British ex-special forces troops killed by Russian attack in Ukraine
...
Fears that three British ex-special forces troops have been killed by a Russian attack in Ukraine are being investigated.
UK authorities are investigating after dozens were killed in a missile strike close to the Ukrainian border with Nato-member Poland on Sunday, amid unconfirmed reports that three Britons were among the casualties.
There has been no official confirmation of their deaths.
More than 30 missiles targeted a training facility in Yavoriv, less than 15 miles from the Polish border, according to the governor of Ukraine’s western Lviv region. More than 130 people were injured.
However a source told the Daily Mirror that there were “many more killed within the site than has been claimed” and that the three men who reportedly died had not been part of a foreign fighters unit that was being trained at the International Centre for Peacekeeping and Security.
The UK Ministry of Defence said it could only comment on cases involving military personnel.
British citizens are advised against all travel to Ukraine by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, while transport secretary Grant Shapps warned British troops and ex-service personnel last week that it is illegal for them to join the fighting in Ukraine.
Following a similar warning from defence secretary Ben Wallace, Mr Shapps told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that any Briton who does so risks worsening a “dangerous situation”.
The training centre appeared to be the most westerly target struck so far in the 18-day conflict, deepening fears of an escalation in the war should Russian missiles inadvertently strike Poland.
Nato said on Sunday that it currently does not have any personnel in Ukraine, though the US has increased the number of US troops deployed to Poland and neighbouring countries.
The Russian attack involved air-launched cruise missiles fired from Russian airspace by long-range bombers, a senior US defence official said on Monday.
The official added that there were no US troops, contractors or civilian government workers at the base.
In Moscow, defence ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov said Russia had used high-precision, long-range weapons to strike Yavoriv and a separate facility in the village of Starichi.
“As a result of the strike, up to 180 foreign mercenaries and a large amount of foreign weapons were destroyed,” he claimed.
The 140-square mile facility is one of Ukraine’s biggest and is the largest in the western part of the country, which has so far been spared the worst of the fighting.
Russian missile strike near NATO’s Poland stirs anxiety
...
WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Russian missile attack that killed at least 35 people in western Ukraine, some 15 miles from NATO member Poland, has stirred anxiety and spurred Poles to rush to passport offices and stockpile essentials amid fears the war could cut off supplies, or even spill over into Poland.
A long line of applicants, unseen for decades, formed Monday outside Warsaw’s main passport office on Krucza Street. Canned food, bottled water, flashlights and batteries filled shoppers’ baskets. People in the street talked of the latest news and their worries for the future.
In the street, outside the passport office, Justyna Winnicka, 44, was filling out the passport form for her 16-year-old daughter, Michalina.
“We want to have a passport because the last one expired and we want to be able to go on vacation, but also want to be able to travel abroad in case something happens here in Poland,” Winnicka told The Associated Press.
Asked if she was afraid because of the fighting just across Poland’s border, she said “Everybody is a little bit afraid today.”
“We all believe that the fact that we are in NATO will protect us in some way, but each of us also remembers the history of World War II and the (failed) alliances of those times,” Winnicka said.
“Things can turn out in different ways. In Poland people are a bit afraid,” she said.
On Sunday, Anna Kwiatkowska, 42, a mother of two, said a friend working for a foreign firm had advised the family to have their passports ready and some dollars, too.
“So I will apply for passports to be done for my children,” said Kwiatkowska, whose children, aged 10 and 8, have not traveled abroad yet.
All this despite the fact that NATO, to which former Eastern bloc nation Poland has belonged since 1999, is strengthening its military presence in eastern Poland, close to the Ukraine border, and stresses that the alliance is fulfilling its task of ensuring Poland’s safety.
But Russia’s strike Sunday on a Ukrainian military training center in Yavoriv, less than 15 miles (25 kilometers) from the border with Poland, shook the confidence of Poles living near the border and created anxiety among others all too aware of Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s past control of Poland’s territory. On Monday, nine people were killed in a morning rocket attack on a television tower in Antopol, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) from the Polish border.
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the attack, close to a refugee route to Poland, was also intended to “provoke panic among civilians” fleeing the “horrors of the war.”
Poland has taken in more than 1.8 million refugees from Ukraine — nearly all women and children — since Feb. 24, when Russian troops invaded Ukraine and then unleashed attacks on hospitals, schools and residential areas.
Morawiecki said that the Yavoriv attack and those on civilians are aimed at “destroying this humanitarian effort ... of help being offered to innocent people, women, children.”
Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Marcin Przydacz, said he does not believe that Russia, which he asserted “visibly is not coping in Ukraine,” would try an attack on a NATO country.
Nevertheless, he stressed “one should be cautious and we are being cautious.”
People in the capital, Warsaw, in central Poland, were all too cognizant of the potential threat to Eastern bloc nations that, like Poland, were once under the control of the Soviet Union, for more than four decades after World War II.
“We have lived in safety so far; I had thought the pandemic was the worst I would experience, but now there is war just across our border,” said 61-year-old retiree Emilia Gancarz.
“I don’t want to experience war, it’s the worst thing in the world,” she said, adding that she is stocking up on candles, dried food, nuts and canned goods, just in case.
She said some of her friends are buying small solar panels, in case of power cuts.
Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski urged calm.
“We all watch President (Volodymyr) Zelenskyy. If he doesn’t panic, we don’t panic. Come on. There is no panic,” Trzaskowski told a news conference.
“Of course people ask questions — what if a rocket goes astray? We also ask what if there is a chemical attack. But there is no panic. We feel safe. We have those very important assurances from President (Joe) Biden and the secretary general of NATO and other friends from NATO countries … who visit us daily,” Trzaskowski said.
Meanwhile, some Poles are doing what they can to try to influence public opinion in Russia and its ally Belarus. With Ukrainian blue-and-yellow flags, they block the road to the Polish border crossing with Belarus, stopping trucks with Russian or Belarusian registration plates. They tell the drivers about the targeting of civilians by Russian forces in Ukraine, but the drivers either say they know nothing about it, or are just minding their own business, according to Poland’s private TNV24.
The Yavoriv attack early Sunday and the barking of dogs woke up residents of the small Polish village of Wielkie Oczy, just over a mile (two kilometers) from Ukraine. From their balconies they could see the glow of explosions and the billowing smoke.
They later flocked to Mass at the local Roman Catholic church, to share what they saw and seek the comfort of neighbors.
The whole family was “in shock. We were afraid,” said 56-year-old Lucyna Lesicka.
The Rev. Jozef Florek, the priest at the Immaculate Conception Church, expressed their anxiety. “If it’s bells not explosions that are waking us up, then we are safe. I am not a prophet, but we had bombs falling not far from us today that woke us up.”

PKN Orlen

Protester breaks into Russian evening newscast with anti-war sign
...
A woman burst onto Russia most-watched live nightly newscast on Monday with a protest sign condemning the war in Ukraine.
In the footage an anchor is reading the news when a woman shows up in the background holding a sign that says "NO WAR."
"Stop the war. Don't believe propaganda. They're lying to you," the sign reads.
She chanted "stop the war, no to war" behind the newscaster.
According to Financial Times Moscow Bureau Chief Max Seddon - himself citing Russian media sources - the woman is Marina Ovsyannikova, an editor at Channel One. She has reportedly already been arrested and charged with "discrediting the Russian armed forces." Channel One's legal defense foundation is planning on defending her against the charges.
She recorded a video prior to the incident in which she condemns Russian President Vladimir Putin and apologises for her previous work on Russian state TV.
In the address she calls Russia the aggressor" and blames Mr Putin for lying to the Russian people.
"Unfortunately, for the last few years I've been working for Channel One. I've been doing Kremlin propaganda and I'm very ashamed of it – that I let people lie from TV screens and allowed the Russian people to be zombified," she says in the video.
She expressed regret for staying silent during Russias 2014 annexation of Crimea.
"We didn't say anything in 2014 when it only just began. We didn't protest when the Kremlin poisoned Navalny. We just silently watched this inhuman regime," she says in the video. "Now the whole world has turned away from us, and ten generations of our descendants won't wash off this fratricidal war."
Ms Ovsyannikova joins more than 750 people who have been arrested across Russia for protesting the war in Ukraine over the last several days.
According to OVD-Info, an independent monitoring group which also reported Ms Ovsyannikova's situation, police have arrested at least 756 people during demonstrations in 37 cities across the country. Approximately half of the arrests occurred in Moscow.
On 4 March, Mr Putin criminalised dissent, prohibiting independent war reporting and protests against the war with sentences of up to 15 years in prison for violators.
Protests against the war have also broken out across Europe, with tens of thousands turning out in Berlin to condemn Mr Putin’s invasion.
Demonstrations have also occurred in London, Warsaw, and outside the Russian embassy in Washington DC.
Ukraine Update: Biden Offers Weapons, Calls Putin ‘War Criminal’
...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the U.S. Congress for more help to fend off the Russian invasion. Hours later, President Joe Biden offered $800 million-worth of new weaponry. He also called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal.”
…
Biden called Putin a “war criminal” on Wednesday, shortly after announcing an expansive new package of military aide to Ukraine including armed drones. The White House has previously been cautious about accusing the Russian leader or his forces of war crimes.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki previously said the U.S. would go through an established process and work with the International Criminal Court to determine whether war crimes had been committed. The U.S. Senate on Tuesday passed a non-binding resolution supporting an investigation into Putin over possible war crimes in Ukraine.

Civilian murders 'more evidence of Putin's war crimes', says Johnson
He said the Russian president’s invasion was failing and Ukrainian forces’ resolve had “never been stronger”.
Johnson stressed he would “do everything in my power to starve Putin’s war machine”, and called for the international criminal court’s war crimes investigation to continue, adding: “We will not rest until justice is served.”
Britain’s foreign secretary, Liz Truss, has declared that the UK will “not rest” until those responsible for atrocities in Ukraine have faced justice.
As Russian troops are forced into retreat, we are seeing increasing evidence of appalling acts by the invading forces in towns such as Irpin and Bucha. Their indiscriminate attacks against innocent civilians during Russia’s illegal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine must be investigated as war crimes. We will not allow Russia to cover up their involvement in these atrocities through cynical disinformation and will ensure that the reality of Russia’s actions are brought to light.”
Will western leaders cut and run as the costs of the Ukraine war mount?
...
How long will the western democracies maintain present levels of support for Ukraine? The war’s economic impact, already manifesting itself through spiralling inflation and living costs, could have seriously negative political consequences for elected leaders in the US, Germany, France and the UK. If public willingness to make difficult sacrifices diminishes in the months ahead and the conflict slips off the front pages, will they stay the course?
As Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, is keenly aware, western love for his country is already highly conditional. Military assistance is limited by Nato’s fear of provoking Vladimir Putin. Emmanuel Macron, France’s president, is “over-eagerly” pushing for a negotiated deal at the risk, British officials claim, of overriding Kyiv’s best interests. Accused by his far-right rival, Marine Le Pen, of ignoring domestic problems, Macron’s poll lead has narrowed before this month’s two-round election.
Germany’s chancellor, Olaf Scholz, is currently fixated on the security of domestic energy supplies, not the future security of Europe. He knows Putin’s threat to cut off the gas, if implemented, would spark a national emergency. Scholz’s ruling coalition is creaking after a row with the Greens, who say he and his former boss, Angela Merkel, were “blind” to the risks of energy dependence on Russia.
This argument will only intensify, the longer the war continues – and not only in Germany. “Europe should stop spending up to €800m per day on purchasing Russian gas,” a new paper from the Centre for European Reform argues. “In 2021 … Russia exported more than 49% of its oil and 74% of its gas to Europe.” Halting all such purchases voluntarily, it said, might be the most effective sanction Europe could impose. “The political will to take such a radical step is still absent.” And, sadly, likely to remain so.
Joe Biden’s Nato and EU summitry last weekend did not produce a much-needed long-term plan for defeating Russia or better weapons for Ukraine’s defenders. But it did raise questions about his leadership. Biden’s crisis management has brought a modest poll boost. A new survey showed 61% of Americans believe higher petrol prices, up 20% in a month, are worth it to beat Russia. Most support additional US troop deployments.
But this spirit of solidarity is finite. Biden looks tired and vulnerable, with a low overall approval rating of 41%. Only 39% approve his handling of the economy. This is the battlefield that matters most in the US as a neo-Trumpist Republican party eyes a takeover of Congress in November. This is why the White House has tapped its strategic oil reserves. Will stumbling Biden stay the course, or seek a quick way out?
In the US and EU, early anti-Putin momentum seems to have stalled and may even be reversing. Ukraine’s foreign minister, Dmytro Kuleba, urged Brussels last week to swiftly introduce a fifth sanctions package. But foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the EU would “maintain” rather than “elevate” pressure on Moscow – the overly cautious approach favoured by Paris and Berlin which infuriates Poland and the Baltic republics.
Russia is actively exploiting these divisions. “The irresponsible Brussels sanctions already negatively affect the daily life of ordinary Europeans,” a foreign ministry official said. Western leaders risked making their peoples’ situation worse, the official added, amid fresh Russian threats to block food and agricultural exports. Meanwhile, China and India give succour to Putin by buying discounted Russian oil.
Ukraine-related pressures on western leaders are undoubtedly escalating across the board. The IMF warned last month that the war would cause “devastating” damage to the global economy as well as deep recessions in Russia and Ukraine. One forecast published last month predicted a £90bn hit to the UK alone as consumers and businesses struggle to recover from the pandemic.
In Spain, the far-right populist party, Vox, has used rising prices to fuel anti-government demonstrations. Similarly politicised protests have been seen in France, Italy and Greece. Worries about a wider war, meanwhile, may help Viktor Orbán, Hungary’s Putin-friendly prime minister, win re-election this weekend.
It may be that western politicians will keep their word and honour their commitments to Ukraine. Or maybe not. Zelenskiy, for one, has his doubts. Speaking to the Economist, he expressed reservations about the trustworthiness and reliability of some leaders, including Boris Johnson.
“Britain wants Ukraine to win and Russia to lose … It is not performing a balancing act,” Zelenskiy said. But he added that he was unsure whether Johnson secretly hoped the war would drag on, thereby weakening Putin (and strengthening Johnson). Zelenskiy said Germany’s “pragmatic” Scholz was mistakenly “on the fence” and urged Orbán to pick a side. His harshest words were reserved for Macron’s government. “They are afraid,” he said bluntly.
If the war grinds on into the autumn, as many predict, economic pain, especially over energy costs, resulting political stresses, “sanctions fatigue”, increased public apathy, and the daunting financial cost of open-ended military assistance, humanitarian aid, and millions of refugees could combine to critically undermine governments’ support for Ukraine’s fight.
A western failure on this scale would be a disaster for Ukraine’s people, Europe’s security and common decency. But it’s possible to see how it might happen. Putin, of course, is watching, waiting for fatal cracks to appear. Yet he, too, faces deeply threatening internal tensions and challenges, as western intelligence chiefs noted last week. They suggest he’s at odds with his generals, is out of touch, and could be losing control.
Maybe this is how the war ends. Not with a bang or a shabby deal but with a slow collapse. Who will last longer: Putin the deluded, paranoid war criminal, or the motley crew of unreliable western politicians who oppose him?

Ukraine winning in the North but war isn't won yet, Klain says
...
“There’s a lot of evidence that Putin is simply taking his troops out of the northern part of the country to redeploy them to the eastern part of the country,” Klain told host George Stephanopoulos.
He added: “There have been victories for the Ukrainians so far, but this war, sadly, is far from over.”
Klain said the Ukrainians have fought bravely and valiantly in fending off Russia invaders. He also said the United States and its NATO allies have to continue to support President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his nation’s military.
“The military future of this attack has to be pushed back,” he said. “That’s why we’re doing so much to back President Zelenskyy and his military with the tools they need, with the weapons they need, with the other aid they need to oust the Russian invasion from their country.”
Speaking later on the same program, Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said he was curious to know what Putin thought of Ukraine’s robust resistance to February’s invasion.
“What would be interesting, I think, would be to know,” Blunt said, “was whether Putin was more surprised by the incredible resistance of the Ukrainians; the rallying around of NATO to the original and unified purpose of NATO, particularly the German change in attitude; or how poorly his own military has performed. I’m sure he’s surprised by all three of those.”
Blunt added: “I don’t think anybody could have anticipated those three big events.”
European calls grow to ban Russian gas amid genocide allegations
In a shift in policy on Sunday, German politicians have indicated the European Union should consider banning Russian gas due to alleged atrocities committed in Ukraine.
Defense minister Christine Lambrecht called for sanctions on Russia in an interview on a German television program on Sunday, clips of which were tweeted from the official defense ministry Twitter account.
The move marks a departure from previous German policy, which tended to oppose such sanctions. Other European officials expressed similar views, with Italian politician Enrico Letta tweeting the same, asking: “How many Bucha before we move to a full oil and gas Russia embargo? Time is over.”
In the UK, rationing Russian gas has also been discussed but thus far has been rejected. Lithuania has ceased all Russian gas imports for domestic needs.
Psaki likely leaving White House soon for new job at MSNBC
04/01/2022 12:16 PM EDT
...
White House press secretary Jen Psaki is likely leaving the White House in a few weeks for a new job with MSNBC, a person with knowledge of the coming move told POLITICO Friday.
The source told POLITICO that Psaki is slated to join MSNBC and have a show on its streaming partner Peacock.
There’s been chatter for weeks about Psaki leaving the briefing room podium for a TV gig. And her absence this week with Covid spurred speculation about whether communications director Kate Bedingfield’s debut at the podium amounted to fill-in duty or a dry run for taking over the role permanently.
Psaki has long said her job as White House’s top spokesperson would be a temporary one and she has already stuck with the job past the one-year timeline she had planned on. During an interview with POLITICO in November, she hadn’t decided if she would stay at the podium through the midterm elections but has often talked about wanting to spend more time with her young children.
“I have two little kids, as you know, 3 and 6,” Psaki said in November. “I also think this is a job that’s the honor of a lifetime — working for this president at this moment in history — but I’m a believer in lifting people up and having new faces and new voices out there, and I think that’s an important part of my role too.”
Bedingfield has expressed interest in taking on the role in the past and is familiar with Biden world. She worked with President Joe Biden in 2015 when he was vice president and was his communications director for the 2020 primary campaign.
Pentagon press secretary John Kirby and Deputy press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre have also been floated as possible contenders for the job. Jean-Pierre would be the first openly gay, Black woman to formally serve as the White House’s top spokesperson.

Wicepremier Piotr Gliński: trzymałem kciuki za Viktora Orbana
...
On wyraźnie poparł wojnę i Putina.
Mamy precyzyjne informacje. Mamy statystyki zniszczeń, informacje o cerkwiach, muzeach, szkołach artystycznych. Natomiast dzięki temu, że Ukraina się broni, zachowała niezniszczony Lwów i wiele innych miejsc.
My odchodzimy od rosyjskich surowców.

Polska The Times:

Gazprom Germania
Gazprom Germania.

Routing of Russian forces from Kyiv area will be hard to repeat in eastern Ukraine
...
Russia’s withdrawal from around Kyiv and the north and north-east of Ukraine appears more comprehensive than most onlookers had anticipated. It will be a little while before the picture becomes definitive, but Moscow’s forces are now fast retreating out of the country from the Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy districts, Ukrainian regional officials say.
It is impossible to describe this as anything other than a serious reverse. Such is the haste of the exit that some units are being left behind to be mopped up by the Ukrainians. Sumy, a little over 30km from the Russian border, did not fall to the invaders, while the road to Chernihiv, which was at risk of encirclement, is now open to the capital to the south-west.
Kyiv too can breathe again: the month of danger has passed and the full withdrawal means that the capital is no longer in range of artillery fire – although it can still be struck by missiles from Belarus, if the Russians bloodymindedly choose to launch them. And, while it may appear that a re-invasion could happen again at any time, the reality is that unless something dramatic happens elsewhere it cannot succeed.
Russia’s problem is that its forces have taken significant losses from its overoptimistic, poorly planned multi-front attack. The number killed could be anywhere from 7,000 to 15,000, with wounded typically double that, from an invasion force of about 140,000. As Mark Cancian, a senior adviser at the US Center for Strategic and International Studies, wrote last week, it could be that Russia has lost “about a quarter of its initial combat force”.
Other estimates from western officials have suggested Russian combat effectiveness may be depleted by a fifth or a sixth, not as high perhaps but still operationally significant. The haste of the retreat acknowledges that the invaders are in many respects exhausted and need to concentrate operations, fighting street by street to take Mariupol in the south and a more conventional military campaign in the Donbas region, where Ukraine’s forces are dug in.
What will happen here is less certain. Russia still has the ability and desire to attack, and its forces are pressing south of Izyum, a key strategic point, to try to envelop the Ukrainian army that faces the separatist Donetsk and Luhansk territories to the east. But it appears its forces are having less success advancing north to join up from Velyka Novosilka, 100km north of Mariupol. And after nearly seven weeks of intense fighting, it is not at all certain Russia can keep up the effort.
“If Russia wants to push back Ukraine’s defenders near Donetsk and Luhansk, they will have to force them out of defensive positions Ukraine has had five more years to prepare. It will require heavy artillery support and a use of combined arms – infantry, tanks, artillery, air power – that we have not seen so far,” said Ben Barry, a land warfare specialist from the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
Ukraine says some Russian forces, brought up as reinforcements, are refusing to fight. On Sunday, its general staff said two battalions of Russian forces from South Ossetia, the breakaway region of Georgia, “refused to participate in combat” in Ukraine and would return to base. Although this cannot be verified for certain, there are enough reports of desertions and poor morale to believe Russian combat effectiveness is massively reduced – against an enemy determined to fight for its homeland.
Meanwhile, mercenaries from the Russian Wagner Group – whose number has been estimated at 1,000 – have been photographed in Donetsk. But these are no replacement for well-trained regular forces: Wagner forces have, for example, struggled in countries such as Mozambique, where they briefly tried to battle an insurgency in the Muslim north in 2019.
Ukraine will recognise the nature of the war has changed. Its supply lines, in particular weapons from the west, have become less fraught. But despite limited counter offensives, there is no sign its forces have the capability to push back the Russian forces where they have made gains in the east and the south. Calls for jets and tanks have gone unheeded, although Australia has promised to send Bushmaster armoured personnel carriers, which will help with mobility.
If Russia choses to dig in, then the military balance – which typically favours the defender on a 3-1 ratio – is reversed. If its forces can complete the bloody recapture of Mariupol, the invaders will control the south between Crimea and the occupied Donbas – and with Odesa blockaded, ensure Ukraine has no access to the sea.
Ukraine has not been defeated, although it faces a fight on its hands in the Donbas. But without a change on the battlefield it may once again be partitioned de facto, against its will.
NYC mayor uses 'Don't Say Gay' law to recruit LGBTQ Floridians with billboard campaign
...
NEW YORK — Mayor Eric Adams announced the placement of billboards denouncing the “Don’t Say Gay” law in five major Florida cities to bring state residents opposed to the legislation to New York City.
“This political showmanship of attempting to demonize a particular group or community is unacceptable and we are going to loudly show our support and say to those living in Florida, ‘Listen, we want you here in New York,’” Adams said at a City Hall press conference Monday.
“Other folks want people to hide their color. We like to show our color and this rainbow is representative of this community,” Adams said in front of poster-sized copies of the advertisements including one with a colorful collage of the word “gay” around the phrase, “Come to the city where you can say whatever you want.”
Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill, dubbed “Don’t Say Gay” bill by opponents, bans instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten through third grade. Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it into law last week.
“I’ll say it because the mayor probably won’t, but I want to give a big FU to Gov. Ron DeSantis for his lack of leadership and solidarity to the LGBTQ community,” New York City Council Member Chi Ossé said at the City Hall press conference.
Adams has partnered with private companies to erect the digital billboards in Fort Lauderdale, Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa and West Palm Beach for eight weeks from April 4 through May 29. City taxpayers will not incur any costs from the campaign that’s being funded by the advertising firm Kinetic, Adams said.
Billboards and social media will display colorful art with catchy phrases like “People say a lot of ridiculous things in New York. ‘Don’t Say Gay,’ isn’t one of them” as part of the campaign.
The announcement comes a month after Adams angered local LGBTQ advocates by appointing officials with histories of making anti-gay remarks to senior positions in his administration. On Monday a reporter asked Adams if he’d commit to demands some of advocates made after a March meeting with the mayor about the controversial hires. One of the asks was to install an office of LGBTQ affairs at City Hall. Adams refused to make any promises.
“We believe he made a big mistake in making those appointments,” said Allen Roskoff, a prominent LGBTQ rights advocate, who stood with Adams at Monday’s press conference after rallying against the mayor just a month earlier.
“We decided to move on and work with the mayor,” Roskoff said. “There’s a lot that we can do together.”
The new mayor has a mixed record on LGBTQ issues. He supported same-sex marriage in 2009 when was a state senator, making an impassioned speech on the body’s floor, comparing laws against the unions to those prohibiting interracial couples from wedding before 1967.
