‘Russia stole our history’: Ukraine’s bitter struggle to keep the truth alive

At the entrance to Taras Shevchenko National University in Kyiv, a bronze relief of the face of Mykhailo Hrushevsky stares out towards the red-painted portico. A historian by training, and a key figure in Ukraine’s national revival in the early 20th century, Hrushevsky served briefly as the head of Ukraine’s revolutionary rada – or parliament – in 1918.
Taras Pshenychnyi, deputy dean of the history department, pauses to examine the image of his distinguished forebear, and to reflect on the extraordinary times the university is seeing since the Russian invasion.
The dean of history and five other professors from his department are serving in the military, he says, along with 15 students, one of whom has been killed in the fighting.
But for people like Pshenychnyi, another, subtler, battle is being fought away from the artillery exchanges on the frontlines. It is a bitter war of memory between two versions of Ukraine’s past and its relationship to Russia, of which Ukraine was a part for centuries until it gained independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union collapsed.
On one side, as Mark Galeotti writes in his recent book A Short History of Russia, is a “crude cut-and-stitched” version of history promoted by Vladimir Putin. Galeotti describes the Russian president as “unwisely considering himself an amateur historian of note” who has used history both to justify his war against Ukraine and to make his “own battle plans on the basis of his misunderstanding of it”.
Putin has argued that Ukraine has no experience of “genuine statehood” outside the USSR and that, by seeking to abandon its Soviet legacy, it has delegitimised itself.
“You wanted to decommunise,” Putin threatened Ukraine before the war. “We’ll show you what decommunisation really means.”
Echoing and amplifying a view of history held by Russian elites going back to the Bolsheviks and before, the Putin version views Ukraine as not a proper country and Ukrainian as not a real language; rather, it is a place to be fought over, dominated and periodically plundered.
All of this has required Ukrainians to follow Hrushevsky and promote their own history. “Russia uses history as a weapon,” says Pshenychnyi, who wrote his doctoral thesis on the devastating famine – the Holodomor – that Stalin created in Ukraine in the early 1930s, which claimed the lives of more than 3 million people and was itself suppressed from Soviet history.
“It has done it before. This is why the conflict is happening now: because Russia has stolen and misinterpreted the history of Ukraine.”
And it is a history that, in the last century at least, is full of grim echoes. Pshenychnyi points to the Russian grain thefts of today as repeats of the Bolshevik and then Stalinist monopolisation of Ukraine’s grain that twice led to famine. He points to the suppression of Ukrainian culture. And to deadly persecutions for using the Ukrainian language and symbols.
“[Putin’s] manipulation of history has created a fake space in Russia to allow the perception of Ukraine as something like a Nazi state,” he says. He is referring to one of the Kremlin’s main talking points: that its “special military operation” is required to “denazify” Ukraine.
And in the midst of a brutal conflict and oppressive occupation, Ukraine’s “war of memory” is not just academic. Several museums, including one in Kharkiv that celebrated 18th-century philosopher Hryhorii Skovoroda, have been destroyed, and Russian history books are being imposed in occupied regions.
“Our main task is the fight against Russian pseudo-historic narrative,” says Pshenychnyi. “But a second task is to create a new historical space cleared from Russian narratives, because since 24 February [when Russia launched its invasion], there has been a wholesale change of national perception.
“Now my students want to know about the Soviet Union’s history, about totalitarianism. One of the courses I teach is about protecting Ukraine’s cultural heritage.”
For some, however, the desire to recast history is more populist and trenchant: in a trend that has been apparent since independence in 1991, they see reclaiming Ukrainian history in more explicitly nationalist terms.
In his Cossack-themed restaurant, Valery Galan, founder of the Museum of the Establishment of Ukrainian State, has signs insisting to customers and staff: “We speak Ukrainian. Language matters.”
An amateur historian who admits to admiring Stepan Bandera – head of the Organisation of Ukrainian Nationalists, which collaborated with the Nazis during the second world war, who was assassinated by KGB agents in Germany in 1959 – he sees the instrumentalisation of history in more brutal terms.
“My hope is that after this horrifying aggression, people will open their eyes. Museums are weapons against fake history. History is not like a rifle that you fire only once. It is a weapon that lasts for decades.
“There’s still a certain part of our society – ethnic Russians or those who supported Russia – who should have been educated sooner.
Galan, who served as an officer in the Soviet Armed Forces, has a new project: a series of museums and exhibitions commemorating the current war. He takes me to a back room where he is collecting artefacts for this new venture, including a spent Javelin anti-tank missile.
“Our language was forbidden. Our Cossacks were sent to Siberia. We need to show people our achievements. How, since the Golden Horde [the period of Mongol rule until 1502], we have stood as a buffer for Europe.”
For Yaroslav Hrytsak, a historian at the Catholic University in Lviv, the practice of history during a war of national survival is less demagogic: “I would say that the main function of the historian now is to provide stability, and assurance that Ukraine has legitimate claims and is bound to win.
“History serves a therapeutic function. The main aim of Putin is to create chaos and confusion. He uses history. To counterattack is to restore real history. The thing is, Putin knows he is lying. But he thinks that everyone is lying, and there is no truth. But there is such a thing as historical truth. I spent half of my life under the Soviet Union. What is important to remember is the extent of historical amnesia imposed on Ukraine.
“I had no idea about the Holodomor because it was erased. The Holocaust was played down to suggest that Soviet Jews were killed not because they were Jews, but because they were Soviet citizens. And while history was treated differently in different Soviet republics, the suppression of history was extreme in Ukraine.
“Ukraine and Russia have two entirely different strategies to the past. For Russia, it’s about making Russia big again, and it’s doing that by turning to history. I have a friend who is a Russian liberal intellectual. He says Russia is like an SUV driving on dirt roads. The windscreen is covered in mud, so all it can see is what’s in the rear view.
“Ukraine’s view of history is different. It wants to leave the past – where there’s nothing but great suffering and war and revolution – behind. For Ukraine, history is about never needing to go back again.”

Twitter users quickly noted a resemblance to the outfit worn by the former Conservative prime minister during a 1979 election broadcast.
Thatcher wore a strikingly similar outfit at the time made up of a white blouse that tied in a large bow at the neck, under a black blazer.
One tweet, which garnered more than 17,500 likes, said: “Liz Truss has recreated Margaret Thatcher’s appearance from her 1979 election broadcast down to the last detail.”
Another user wrote: “Has Liz Truss rifled through Margaret Thatcher‘s wardrobe?”
“Google Margaret Thatcher blouse and tell me Liz Truss isn’t cosplaying as Lady T right now,” a third person said.

UK heatwave: Cinema chain offers free entry to red-haired people

UK cinema chain Showcase has offered free entry to red-haired people during the heatwave.
The Met Office has warned that temperatures could reach 40C next week for the first time in UK history.
On Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 July, red-haired people – whom studies have found to be more sensitive to the sun than others – will be able to see a film at any Showcase cinema for free.
One ticket per red-haired person can be claimed per day, at local box offices, and there will be no reimbursements for previously purchased tickets.
Mark Barlow, UK general manager for Showcase Cinemas, said: “While the UK enjoys some much-needed sunny weather, we know how hard some people find the heat.
“That’s why, to tackle the heatwave, we’re offering redheads free entry to our cinema screens this Monday and Tuesday, so they’ll be able to enjoy some of the amazing films on offer in the comfort of our air-conditioned cinema screens and ensure they stay protected from the sun.”
Films screening at cinemas on Monday and Tuesday include Chris Hemsworth-starrer Thor: Love and Thunder, the biopic Elvis, Top Gun: Maverick, The Gray Man, Lightyear and Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Boris Johnson is skipping a crisis meeting on the looming life-threatening heatwave to host a party at his luxury Chequers rural retreat.
Ministers and experts are gathering in the Cabinet Office on Saturday afternoon for a Cobra meeting to prepare for temperatures hitting an unprecedented 40C on Monday.
But the prime minister will be 30 miles away in Buckinghamshire at a party for friends and family, ahead of being kicked out of his country retreat at the start of September.
It is going ahead after Mr Johnson and his wife Carrie had to abandon an earlier plan to use Chequers for a delayed wedding reception after heavy criticism.
Angela Rayner, Labour’s deputy leader, said: “Boris Johnson has gone missing in action again. He’s back to his old trick of skipping important Cobra meetings.
“The public will have no confidence in this zombie Conservative government responding swiftly and decisively to this national emergency as this disgraced prime minister prepares to party while Britain boils.”
A Downing Street source told The Independent it was “not unusual” for other members of the cabinet, in this case Cabinet Office minister Kit Malthouse, to lead Cobra meetings.
Mr Johnson’s absence mirrors the controversy at the start of his premiership when he missed a string of meetings on the Covid pandemic as he arranged his divorce and penned a book on Shakespeare, it is believed.
Chequers, a grade l-listed 16th-century mansion and the official country residence of British prime ministers since 1921, boasts an indoor swimming pool and hundreds of acres of gardens.
Formal invitations went out earlier this week to the party, it is thought. A Tory source told Sky News: “It is their farewell bash at Chequers this weekend. Partners and children are all invited.”
It is the second Cobra meeting Mr Malthouse has led on the threat posed by the heatwave in Mr Johnson’s absence, after an earlier one was held last Thursday.
Meteorologists estimate an 80 per cent chance of the mercury topping the UK’s record temperature of 38.7C, set in Cambridge in 2019, when the hot spell peaks on Tuesday.
The Met Office issued its first red warning for extreme heat, covering a swathe of England from London to Manchester and York on Monday and Tuesday.
Sadiq Khan, the London mayor, has hosted a special meeting to ensure the NHS, the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire Brigade, the London Ambulance Service, councils and Transport for London have a robust plan for the capital.
Ms Rayner added of Mr Johnson’s absence: “Where’s the plan for the delivery of essential services and how people will be kept safe at work, on transport, in schools, hospitals and care homes?”
The prime minister is also believed to be preparing to miss next Wednesday’s prime minister’s questions in the Commons, which would have been his last.
He is expected to attend a memorial service for the assassinated former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe in the middle of the week.

Britain’s armed forces chief has dismissed speculation that Russian President Vladimir Putin is “not well” or could be assassinated as “wishful thinking”.
The UK Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin was asked if President Putin, who launched an invasion of Ukraine in February, could be “toppled” or face “regime change”.
But he told Sophie Raworth on BBC One’s Sunday Morning show: “I think some of the comments that he’s not well or that actually surely somebody’s going to assassinate him or take him out, I think they’re wishful thinking.
“As military professionals we see a relatively stable regime in Russia, President Putin has been able to quash any opposition, we see a hierarchy that is invested in President Putin and so nobody at the top has got the motivation to challenge President Putin, and that is bleak.”
He said the “challenge of Russia is going to endure” potentially for “decades in terms of Russia as a threat”, and the next prime minister should know that Russia is “the biggest threat” to the UK.
He added: “So the biggest threat is Russia, and that’s Russia in all its guises when you look at it militarily.
“Its land forces are probably less of a threat in the short term because of that degradation, that depletion that we’re seeing with their struggle in Ukraine.
“But Russia continues to be a nuclear power, it’s got cyber capabilities, it’s got space capabilities, and it’s got particular programmes under water so it can threaten the underwater cables that allow the world’s information to transit around the whole globe.”
On what Britain’s armed forces would look like if defence spending increased to 3% of GDP, he said: “I think they would be even more modern and they would have even more punch and they would have even more impact around the world, and that’s clearly a choice for government.”
Reflecting on a recent visit to Kyiv, he said Ukraine’s army “absolutely” believed it will win the war.
He added: “They plan to restore the whole of their territory in terms of Ukraine, and they see a Russia that is struggling, a Russia that we assess has lost more than 30% of its land combat effectiveness.
“What that actually means is 50,000 Russian soldiers that have either died or been injured in this conflict, nearly 1,700 Russian tanks destroyed, nearly 4,000 armoured fighting vehicles that belong to Russia destroyed.”
On how he will brief the next Prime Minister, he added: “We will always give them a brief on the current situation so they are aware of where we have our armed forces.
“That’s dominated by Ukraine and the support that we are providing to Ukraine but we also try to step back and give a wider threat picture.
“And then we have to remind the Prime Minister of the extraordinary responsibility they have with the UK as a nuclear power, and that is part of the initiation for a new British Prime Minister.”

Глава Харьковской областной военной администрации Олег Синегубов заявил, что местные власти понимают, что оккупанты не отказались от своих планов по захвату Харькова: «Противник не оставил своих позиций в нашем районе, как он это сделал под натиском нашей армии под Киевом или под Сумами. Мы слышим взрывы под Харьковом — в местах, где наши вооруженные силы ведут бои за удержание позиций, пытаясь оттеснить от захватчиков и освободить наши земли».

Тренировки начались на полигонах вооруженных сил Германии в земле Шлезвиг-Гольштейн. На данный момент на обучении находятся не менее 100 военнослужащих украинской армии. Бойцы должны ознакомиться с самоходными зенитками Gepard и пройти артиллерийскую подготовку. При этом Бундесвер официально не подтверждает информацию о тренировках.
Gepard – это многоцелевая система, способная прикрывать военные колонны на марше, наносить удары из засад, выполнять контроль обстановки и обстрелы летательного аппарата, корректируя огонь.

Британские журналисты сообщили о еще одном британце, попавшем в российский плен. Это Джон Хардинг, парамедик, служивший в батальоне "Азов" с 2018. В плен он попал в мае этого года в Мариуполе.
О пленении Хардинга стало известно после того, как в России было опубликовано видео с ним.
На нем Хардинг давал интервью российской телеведущей и призывал премьера Бориса Джонсона помочь ему, потому что ему грозит смертная казнь. Родственники пленного подтвердили его личность и сообщили, что с ними держат связь представители МИД Великобритании.
По данным ВВС, в настоящий момент Хардинг находится на территории, контролируемой "ДНР".

"Ураган голода" для мира спрогнозировал президент и главный исполнительный директор одного из крупнейших в мире поставщиков минеральных удобрений - компании Yara - Свейн Торе Холсетер в интервью Der Spiegel.
Такие последствия, по его мнению, будет иметь война в Украине, сокращения поставок продовольствия и удобрений, а также российского газа в Европу. По словам Холсетера, по сравнению с прошлой осенью ситуация с продовольственной безопасностью сильно ухудшилась.
Он говорит, что многие страны находятся в остром продовольственном кризисе, которого не было уже давно. По его оценке, это происходит из-за множества связанных друг с другом обстоятельств.
Например, сокращения объемов поставок продовольствия и удобрений, уменьшение поставок и увеличение цен на газ влияют на стоимость удобрений, а климатический кризис и конфликт в Украине препятствует экспорту продовольствия и выращиванию зерна.

Засуха приводит к обмелению рек, что сказывается на производстве электроэнергии на ГЭС. Из-за теплой и малоснежной зимы уровень воды в Рейне резко упал к началу весны, но таяние снега на некоторое время замаскировало кризис. С тех пор на большей части Европы выпадало очень мало дождей. Список европейских рек, пострадавших от засухи, длинный, включая Рейн, Эбро, Рону и По и другие. Например, уровень воды в По - самый низкий за последние 70 лет.
Засуха имеет значение не только для производства электроэнергии на гидроэлектростанциях. Угольные электростанции в Германии полагаются на водные пути, такие как Рейн, для перевозки топлива на баржах. А французские атомные электростанции используют реки для охлаждения. Если генерация электроэнергии через ГЭС, ТЭС и АЭС будет остановлена, Европе останутся только ветер и солнечная энергия, которые также зависят от капризов погоды.
Так вот и получается, что погода играет на руку России, констатирует Bloomberg.

During very hot weather, train speed has to be limited to reduce the risk of damaging the tracks, which can buckle in extreme cases.
Meanwhile, BBC Weather presenter and meteorologist Simon King has pointed out that temperatures could reach 42°C in the East Midlands on Tuesday – tweeting that this level of heat “just shouldn’t happen.”

Persuasion: Costume designer reveals why Dakota Johnson’s input was ‘vital’
Regency-era fashion is here to stay – at least that’s what Netflix wants us to think. Just months after dropping the new season of Bridgerton, the streaming platform has released Jane Austen’s Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson and Henry Golding.
The cast’s costumes were inspired by ephemera from the period: dresses, museum pieces and paintings. And although reviews have been, um, varied, there’s no denying the film is sumptuous to look at. From the colourful empire waist dresses to pared down accessories – all designed in a contrived colour palette – the Regency-era costumes in Persuasion offer period clothing with a more contemporary twist, with lowered waistlines and a more quiet and minimalist aesthetic.
Persuasion’s heroine is Anne Elliot, everyone’s low-key Austen favourite; she is, as was ever thus, entangled in suitor drama. There’s the inappropriate suitor, Captain Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), AKA the man she loved – but deemed inappropriate suitor by her aristocratic family. And then there’s the dashing, curveball suitor, Mr Elliot (Golding). Let the fraught emotions commence.
Ahead of Persuasion’s release, we caught up with the film’s London-based costume designer Marianne Agertoft, whose credits include Poldark, Utopia and Netflix’s Cursed.
How did you prepare for ‘Persuasion’?
We had precious little time on Persuasion and had just nine weeks of prep before we started filming. We started everything from scratch, from getting the team together, sourcing the makers, finding the workroom, and doing the budget.
My mood boards are always the starting point. The mood boards evolve with the addition of more specific details of cut and colours for each character and as the characters’ “journey” or story becomes clearer.
How did the costumes come together?
The evolving mood boards are used for communication with the director, the production designer and the cinematographer. We collaborate on textures and colours which bring the overall look and feel of the film together. The colour palette and texture is extremely important to me, I mainly work with patterns when they create a texture rather than a contrast. Much time is spent dyeing fabrics and working texture into each and every garment.
I do very simple sketches and work with the cutter to achieve the final cuts of garments during fittings. This enables me to have the visual and verbal feedback from the actor.
What was the inspiration behind the costumes?
MA: Some designs leaned on paintings of the period. Details were inspired from cuts of historic garments and museum pieces. Another inspiration was the script, which felt contemporary - it had attitude and humour.
What was your style inspiration for dressing the role of Anne Elliot, and how involved was Dakota Johnson?
My initial mood board had images of three other heroines who I felt style and mood wise illustrated the various sides to Anne Elliot: Patti Smith, Debbie Harry and Audrey Hepburn. I was wanting to create a more simple, timeless ease and unique feel in her style in comparison to her sisters’ more typical regency style.
I shared all the mood boards (with all the characters, not just Anne Elliot) with Dakota, so she was aware where I was intending to go with the characters in order to give her a point of reference to form her own opinions. Dakota was generous with her time and her input was vital.
The fittings were exciting and full on with lots of garments to develop. There were items that were dismissed in the fittings but then were brought in as filming went on. In particular there was a riding hat which seemed too much at the fitting stage but Dakota felt it was right once we were at the location.
What about your inspiration for Cosmo Jarvis’ Captain Frederick Wentworth and Henry Golding’s Mr Elliot?
The attractive and interesting, yet slightly awkward hero that Cosmo portrays was a joy to dress. The civilian costumes were all about the textures and feel of the sea. The deliberate wear on all his clothes adds warmth and sets him apart from Mr Elliot and Sir Walter.
The Western duel feel between Wentworth and Mr Elliot when they first meet on the stunning clifftop was the main inspiration for Henry. This includes a well loved but dented top hat we ended up having to give him to wear for the first days of filming. The Italian handmade to measure top hats we had made for the production were stuck at the border due to Brexit and only got to us a week after we started filming.
How crucial is dressing the supporting roles?
The supporting actors and their contribution in terms of what they wear and how they wear their garments is crucial to offset or enhance the look of the leading characters. Their costumes help us visually set the tone of the leading actors’ characters. It is the way to create and enhance nuances in the story which the audience can then relate to visually.
Did you have a favourite look or character? Was there any look in particular you were surprised by or excited about?
I really enjoyed creating Nikki Amuka Bird’s character, the unique Lady Russel. She is a strong woman who has guarded and inspired Anne, despite persuading her to let go of Wentworth. There are deliberate similarities in the cut and individuality in Anne and Lady Russell’s wardrobes. It was a wonderful opportunity to take artistic license - my favourite garment for Lady Russel is the golden pelisse she wears in the opening scenes.
What was a typical day working on the set like for you?
The filming was entirely location based so you have to move around constantly. This makes the days even more varied and less predictable. The reality is I spent precious little time on set. Generally I start the day on set by establishing costumes to make sure that we have got everything in place. Other days I will have to juggle the filming set to keep the prep in London (or nearby) going for upcoming characters or costumes which are still required for the cast. That often meant going back to our costume base in London unless we had managed to set up a costume space near the location.
What was the hardest part of working on ‘Persuasion’?
From the outset we were a small team. We were then challenged by a lot of us having to self isolate due to Covid and the team was stretched. The fact that this may not show in the end, is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of each and everyone who was part of the extraordinary costume team.
Without spoiling any details, what should fans be looking forward to with the film?
