Shelling in the center of the Russian border city of Belgorod Saturday killed 21 people, including three children, local officials reported.
A further 110 people were wounded in the strike, said regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, making it one of the deadliest attacks on Russian soil since the start of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine 22 months ago.
Russian authorities accused Kyiv of carrying out the attack, which took place the day after an 18-hour aerial bombardment across Ukraine killed at least 41 civilians.
Images of Belgorod on social media showed burning cars and plumes of black smoke rising among damaged buildings as air raid sirens sounded. One strike hit close to a public ice rink in the very heart of the city, which lies 25 miles (40 kilometers) north of the Ukrainian border and 415 miles (670 kilometers) south of Moscow. While previous attacks have hit the city, they have rarely taken place in daylight and have claimed fewer lives.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said it identified the ammunition used in the strike as Czech-made Vampire rockets and Olkha missiles fitted with cluster-munition warheads. It provided no additional information, and The Associated Press was unable to verify its claims.
“This crime will not go unpunished,” the ministry said in a statement on social media.
The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin had been briefed on the situation, and that the country’s health minister, Mikhail Murashko, was ordered to join a delegation of medical personnel and rescue workers traveling to Belgorod from Moscow.
Russian diplomats also called for a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in connection with the strike. Speaking to Russia’s state news agency, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Britain and the United States were guilty of encouraging Kyiv to carry out what she described as a “terrorist attack.” She also placed blame on EU countries who had supplied Ukraine with weapons.
“Silence in response to the unbridled barbarity of Ukraine’s Nazis and their puppeteers and accomplices from ‘civilized democracies’ will be akin to complicity in their bloody deeds,” the ministry said in a statement.
Earlier Saturday, Moscow officials reported shooting down 32 Ukrainian drones over the country’s Moscow, Bryansk, Oryol, and Kursk regions.
They also reported that cross-border shelling had killed two other people in Russia. A man died and four other people were wounded when a missile struck a private home in the Belgorod region late Friday evening and a 9-year-old was killed in a separate incident in the Bryansk region.
Cities across western Russia have come under regular attack from drones since May, with Russian officials blaming Kyiv. Ukrainian officials never acknowledge responsibility for attacks on Russian territory or the Crimean Peninsula. However, larger aerial strikes against Russia have previously followed heavy assaults on Ukrainian cities.
Russian drone strikes against Ukraine continued Saturday, with the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reporting that 10 Iranian-made Shahed drones had been shot down across the Kherson, Khmelnytskyi, and Mykolaiv regions.
Local officials reported that three people had been killed by Russian missiles: a 55-year-old man in the Kherson region, a 43-year-old man in Stepnohirsk, a town in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, and a 32-year-old in the Chernihiv region.
On Friday, Moscow’s forces launched 122 missiles and dozens of drones across Ukraine, an onslaught described by one air force official as the biggest aerial barrage of the war.
As well as the 39 deaths, at least 160 people were wounded and an unknown number were buried under rubble in the assault, which damaged a maternity hospital, apartment blocks, and schools.
Western officials and analysts recently warned that Russia limited its cruise missile strikes for months in an apparent effort to build up stockpiles for massive strikes during the winter, hoping to break the Ukrainians’ spirit.
Fighting along the front line is largely bogged down by winter weather after Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive failed to make a significant breakthrough along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) line of contact.
Russia’s ongoing aerial attacks have also sparked concern for Ukraine’s neighbors.
Poland’s defense forces said Friday that an unknown object had entered the country’s airspace before vanishing off radars, and that all indications pointed to it being a Russian missile.
Speaking to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, Russia’s charge d’affaires in Poland, Andrei Ordash, said Saturday that Moscow would not comment on the event until Warsaw had given the Kremlin evidence of an airspace violation.
“We will not give any explanations until we are presented with concrete evidence because these accusations are unsubstantiated,” he said.

Ukrainian Missile Attack on a Russian City Kills at Least 20, Officials Say

The Russian authorities said on Saturday that a Ukrainian attack on the city of Belgorod had killed at least 20 people and injured more than 110 others, in what would be the deadliest single assault against a Russian city since the start of the war nearly two years ago.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said in a statement that Ukraine had hit Belgorod — a regional center of around 330,000 residents about 25 miles north of the Ukrainian border — with two missiles and several rockets, adding that the strike was “indiscriminate.”
The ministry said that most of the rockets had been shot down, but that some debris had fallen on the city. The Ukrainian government has not officially commented on the Belgorod attack, and Russian claims could not be independently verified.
The attack seemed to be Ukraine’s response to a massive and deadly Russian air assault against its territory a day earlier, and another sign of Kyiv’s determination to bring the war to Moscow’s doorstep. In his overnight address on Friday, President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine said that his country would continue to “work toward pushing the war back” to “where it came from — home to Russia.”
Saturday’s attack on Belgorod were quickly followed by what Ukrainian officials said were several Russian strikes against the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, about 40 miles from Belgorod, in apparent cross-border retaliation.
The back-to-back assaults underscored how both Moscow and Kyiv remain willing to escalate a war that will most likely mark its two-year anniversary in February, despite Ukraine’s problems with securing Western funding, an increased sense of war fatigue in Russia and enormous casualties on both sides.
“There will always be an answer for all crimes,” Andriy Yermak, the head of the Ukrainian president’s office, wrote on social media on Saturday, while Russia’s Defense Ministry said that the attack against Belgorod would “not go unpunished.”
While the details of Saturday’s attack into Russia were not immediately clear, the death toll alone made it noteworthy. Many Russians have held onto a sense of relative normalcy despite the war, but the violence in Belgorod — which explosions have rocked repeatedly over the last two years — shattered that stability.
To many Ukrainians, the strikes bring home to Russia the kind of suffering that they have endured almost daily for nearly two years; to many pro-war Russians, they are evidence that Moscow must use even more aggressive tactics in Ukraine.
The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry posted a video of the aftermath of the bombardment that showed cars on fire, injured people being carried to shelter and broken glass on the city’s buildings. And Russian state television broadcast videos posted by residents of Belgorod that showed plumes of smoke over the city, shattered glass near residential buildings and people lying on pavements — in a striking echo of scenes that unfolded a day before in Ukrainian cities such as Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipro.
Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, said that three children were among those killed on Saturday and that a residential area in the city center had been hit.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said that an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting would be convened to discuss the attack. On Friday, the same Council met to address Russia’s assault against Ukrainian cities, with the United States, France and Britain strongly condemning the attack.
Ukraine has said several times that it does not fear taking the war to Russian territory, and it has previously targeted the Belgorod region with cross-border strikes and even brief ground assaults by Kyiv-backed, anti-Kremlin Russian fighters.
So far, such attacks have resulted in at least 50 deaths inside Russia, according to the United Nations, as well as the evacuation of a few thousand civilians and minor clashes with the Russian military.
Saturday’s strike on Belgorod was in response to Russia’s air assault on Friday against Ukraine, said an official from Ukraine’s intelligence services, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter, adding that only military facilities had been targeted. The assault on Ukraine — one of the largest of the war — killed at least 39 people, wounded about 160 others and hit civilian and military infrastructure.
Ukrainian rescuers on Saturday were still pulling bodies from the rubble of a factory that was struck in central Kyiv, the capital, according to local authorities.
And on Saturday evening, the Ukrainian authorities said, Russia launched an assault on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, in what appeared to be Russia’s own response to the Ukrainian attack.
Ukrainian prosecutors in the Kharkiv region said that Russian missiles fired from the Belgorod region targeted the eastern Ukrainian city and that at least 21 people had been injured in the attack. The local authorities added that the Russian military struck the city center six times and reported damage to residential buildings, shops and a medical facility.
Unverified videos and images shared on social media also showed that the Kharkiv Palace Hotel, one of the city’s most popular hotels and a frequent venue for foreign journalists, was hit. Photos of the aftermath of the attack showed the facade of the building pierced by a huge hole the size of several stories.
The back-to-back air assaults on Friday and Saturday come as Ukrainian and Russian troops are bogged down on land in bloody and mostly inconclusive fighting. Moscow has made several advances all along the front in recent weeks, but military experts say its gains are incremental and unlikely to lead to a major breakthrough in the near future.

Ukrainian attacks on Russian regions near the border have continued almost daily for over a year, sometimes resulting in civilian casualties, but this would be one of the single deadliest incidents yet reported. CNN cannot independently confirm the death toll.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed about the attack in Belgorod, the Kremlin said, ordering a health ministry team and emergencies ministry rescuers to be sent to the city to help those affected.
About 40 civilian facilities have been damaged in the city due to the shelling, which caused 10 fires which have since been extinguished.
Russian authorities said Belgorod was also shelled Friday night with one civilian killed, the region’s governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said. Four others, including a child, were injured, he added.
On Saturday, a child also died as a result of Ukrainian shelling in Russia’s Bryansk region, the region’s Governor Aleksandr Bogomaz said.
Russia’s defense ministry said it destroyed 32 Ukrainian UAVs flying over the Russian regions of Bryansk, Oryol, Mursk, and Moscow, according to a Telegram post by the defense ministry Saturday.
Ukraine has not publicly commented on the incidents and rarely claims responsibility for attacks on its neighbor.
Rescuers comb through Kyiv rubble
The toll from the Russian strikes on Ukraine – which saw an unprecedented number of drones and missiles fired at targets across the country – meanwhile continued to mount.
A 77-year-old man died from his injuries in the city of Odesa, Oleh Kiper, the head of the Odesa region military administration said, bringing the total killed to 40.
The man was critically injured when a missile hit a three-storey building in the center of Odesa, Kiper added.
Schools, a maternity hospital, shopping arcades and blocks of flats were among the buildings hit in Friday’s barrage, prompting widespread international condemnation and renewing calls for more military aid.
The toll in the capital Kyiv rose to at least 16, after the bodies of more civilians were recovered from the rubble of a warehouse, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said Saturday. All the deaths in Kyiv occurred at the warehouse.
“The attack on the capital city on December 29 was the largest in terms of civilian casualties” since the start of the full-scale invasion, he said.
“Rescuers are working and will continue to clear the rubble until tomorrow,” Klitschko said. “January 1 will be declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv.”
During the wave of strikes, Poland’s military authorities claimed that an “unidentified airbourne object” briefly entered its airspace.
Russia said it would not give any any explanation “until concrete evidence is presented.”
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg wrote on X that NATO remained vigilant over the incident.

Je to buranská neomalenost, prohlašuje ministryně obrany Jana Černochová poté, co Rusové žádali, aby se v souvislosti s incidentem v Bělgorodu zúčastnil jednání Rady bezpečnosti OSN i zástupce Česka.
Ministryně obrany Jana Černochová (ODS) se ohradila proti výpadům ruských představitelů na adresu Česka.
Ti v souvislosti s ostřelováním ruského příhraničního města Bělgorod, po němž dle ruských zdrojů zemřelo už 24 lidí, označili za faktického spoluviníka právě Česko, jelikož při útoku z ukrajinského území měly být použity i raketomety české výroby RM-70 Vampire.
„Verbální výpady vůči České republice, snaha předvolat si naše zástupce ‚na kobereček‘ v rámci Rady bezpečnosti OSN, výroky o zbabělosti, to vše je z ruské strany buranská neomalenost,“ uvedla Černochová pro Seznam Zprávy k diplomatickým dozvukům incidentu v Bělgorodu.
„Nechápu, proč je Rusko zaskočeno ostřelováním z ukrajinské strany, kterou napadlo, s kterou válčí a které obsadilo část území. Opravdu se Rusko diví, že se Ukrajina brání a ostřeluje jeho území, což je dle mezinárodního práva zcela v pořádku?“ vznesla Černochová otázku.
Je to Rusko, kdo pošlapal právo
Ze zbabělosti a malomyslnosti obvinil v neděli ráno Českou republiku zástupce ruského velvyslance při OSN Dmitrij Poljanskij.
A to poté, co se Česko odmítlo zúčastnit zasedání Rady bezpečnosti OSN svolaného Ruskem kvůli sobotnímu ostřelování Bělgorodu. Moskva z něj viní ukrajinskou armádu a po Praze žádala, aby se jednání Rady bezpečnosti OSN zúčastnil její zástupce a vysvětlil české dodávky zbraní na Ukrajinu. Český ministr Jan Lipavský účast českého diplomata na zasedání odmítl.
„Vaše zbabělost a malomyslnost jsou zaznamenány. Předpokládáme, že Česká republika se již nebude účastnit zasedání Rady bezpečnosti OSN na téma Ukrajina,“ napsal Poljanskij v češtině v reakci na vyjádření šéfa české diplomacie na sociální síti X.
Česká ministryně obrany Jana Černochová ve svém vyjádření pro Seznam Zprávy ale zdůrazňuje, že válku vyvolal Putinův režim a ten má na svědomí i tisíce obětí na ukrajinské straně.
„Je to Rusko, kdo pošlapává útokem na Ukrajinu mezinárodní právo, kdo zbaběle vraždí denně ukrajinské civilisty a ještě má tu drzost se na půdě Rady bezpečnosti OSN domáhat svých zájmů. Je to jen doklad toho, že Rusko nemá jako agresor v Radě bezpečnosti dávno co pohledávat,“ uvedla pro Seznam Zprávy česká ministryně obrany.
Dodávky zbraní budou pokračovat
Česko podle Černochové nijak nepřehodnotí svou dosavadní politiku, ani co se týče dodávek zbraní pro Ukrajinu.
„S ruskými agresivními a mužikovskými manýry máme tu nejhorší historickou zkušenost. Primitivní výpady představitelů putinovského režimu si nenecháme líbit a rozhodně se jimi nenecháme zastrašovat. A Ukrajině budeme dál pomáhat, jak to bude v našich silách, aby ruské imperiální choutky zastavila,“ uvedla Černochová s tím, že je to i ve vlastním zájmu Česka.
„A jestli dodávky zbraní Ukrajině pomáhají zastavit Putinovu vraždící hordu, je to jenom dobře a můžeme v České republice dál klidně spát,“ soudí Černochová.

Jeho pevný postoj a okamžité odmítnutí účasti na jednání Rady bezpečnosti OSN, svolaném na žádost Ruska, nebylo pouze formálním diplomatickým gestem, ale výrazem hlubokého odporu vůči manipulaci a propagandě, které se Rusko snaží ve světové politice prosazovat.
Ministr Lipavský je známý svým postojem, že agresorovi se neustupuje, což jasně signalizuje, že Česká republika nehodlá být jen jakousi loutkou v rukou těch, kteří se snaží překrucovat realitu ve svůj prospěch. V době, kdy Rusko bezostyšně ostřeluje Ukrajinu, k němuž zůstává světové společenství většinou pasivní, je Lipavského postoj výrazem nejen podpory samotné Ukrajině, ale i odmítnutí jakékoli formy agrese.
Na tom všem je nejzajímavější právě ruská reakce na podobné akce, pokud se sami ocitnou v roli oběti. Jejich okamžité odvolávání se na mezinárodní právo a organizace, které sami jinak směle ignorují, odhaluje hlubokou pokryteckost a dvojí metr, jenž aplikují v mezinárodní politice. To, že se nyní hlasitě ohrazují proti podobným akcím, když jsou sami terčem útoku, působí skutečně ironicky.
Pan ministr Lipavský svým postojem dal Rusku jasně najevo, že Česká republika se jejich silných řečí nebojí a že stojí pevně na straně pravdy a spravedlnosti. Jeho postoj je příkladem toho, jak by měla vypadat zahraniční politika suverénního státu, která se nezakládá na strachu či podléhání silnějším, ale na principu svobody a respektování mezinárodního práva.
Právě podobné postoje by měly být pilířem pro mezinárodní normy a hodnoty, které jsou základem civilizovaného světového společenství. Odvaha a principiálnost ministra zahraničí si v tomto případě zaslouží náš obdiv a jednoznačnou podporu.
Je dobré vědět, že i v době konfliktů a nejistoty můžeme najít politiky, kteří mají odvahu stát si za svými slovy a činy.
Děkuji panu ministrovi za to, že nám ukázal, jak by měla vypadat pravá zahraniční politika suverénního státu. Politika neochvějná, odvážná, a především založená na pravdě. A jsem rád, že takovým státem je právě naše Česká republika.

Ze zbabělosti a malomyslnosti obvinil v neděli ráno zástupce ruského velvyslance při OSN Dmitrij Poljanskij Českou republiku, která se odmítla zúčastnit zasedání Rady bezpečnosti OSN svolaného Ruskem kvůli sobotnímu ostřelování ruského Bělgorodu. Moskva z něj viní ukrajinskou armádu a po Praze žádala, aby se jednání RB OSN zúčastnil její zástupce a vysvětlil české dodávky zbraní na Ukrajinu. Český ministr Jan Lipavský účast českého diplomata na zasedání odmítl.
„Vaše zbabělost a malomyslnost jsou zaznamenány. Předpokládáme, že Česká republika se již nebude účastnit zasedání Rady bezpečnosti OSN na téma Ukrajina,“ napsal Poljanskij v češtině v reakci na vyjádření šéfa české diplomacie na sociální síti X.
Lipavský: Nesloužíme lží otrávené propaganda
Lipavský na platformě předtím napsal, že se Česko odmítá nechat Ruskem kamkoliv předvolávat. „Česko nebude sloužit lží otrávené propagandě agresora. Až bude chtít Rusko na půdě Rady bezpečnosti řešit stažení svých okupačních vojsk, rádi dorazíme,“ uvedl český ministr.
Ruský velvyslanec při OSN Vasilij Něbenzja na zasedání Rady bezpečnosti v noci na dnešek podle ČTK prohlásil, že české střely zabily civilisty v Bělgorodu. Kritizoval také, že Praha nevyhověla ruské žádosti a zasedání v RB OSN se odmítla zúčastnit. Ukrajina podle tvrzení Moskvy použila k útoku mimo jiné raketomety RM-70 Vampire české výroby.
Sobotní ostřelování bylo jedním z největších, kterému během války na Ukrajině Bělgorod čelil, a podle ruských úřadů si vyžádalo 22 obětí a desítky zraněných. Údery podle ruských úřadů zasáhly výhradně civilní objekty.
Ukrajinská média s odvoláním na své zdroje napsala, že ukrajinské síly útočily na armádní cíle v Bělgorodské oblasti a že výbuchy a požáry v Bělgorodu zapříčinila neprofesionalita ruské protivzdušné obrany. Server RBK-Ukrajina také uvedl, že útok ukrajinských sil na ruskou armádní infrastrukturu je „následek“ barbarských pátečních ruských útoků na ukrajinská města.
Rusko, které Ukrajinu vojensky napadlo loni v únoru, v pátek podle Kyjeva uskutečnilo nejrozsáhlejší vzdušný útok na Ukrajinu od začátku své invaze, který napříč zemí připravil o život na 40 civilistů, další desítky jich zranil a způsobil rozsáhlé škody mimo jiné na infrastruktuře i civilních budovách.
Na samotném zasedání Rady bezpečnosti pak podle ČTK ruský velvyslanec Vasilij Něbenzja prohlásil, že české střely zabily civilisty v ruském Bělgorodu. Kritizoval také, že Česko nevyhovělo ruské žádosti a zasedání se odmítlo zúčastnit.
Ukrajina podle Moskvy použila k útoku mimo jiné raketomety RM-70 Vampire české výroby. Pro svá tvrzení Rusko nepředložilo žádné důkazy.

Největším sympatiím se nyní u obyvatel České republiky těší Slovensko a Rakousko, následované Polskem. Na konci žebříčku se umístily Ukrajina, Čína a Rusko.
Po vlně solidarity, která se v Česku zvedla před necelými dvěma roky, kdy 24. února Rusko zahájilo invazi na Ukrajinu, se sympatie obyvatel České republiky k napadené zemi obrací.
Zjistilo to Centrum pro výzkum veřejného mínění působící při Akademii věd.
Ukrajina se zařadila mezi země, které jsou většině Čechů nesympatické. Patří tam spolu s Čínou a Ruskem.
„U Izraele, Turecka, Ukrajiny, Číny a Ruska již více či méně převažovaly antipatie nad sympatiemi. V případě Číny a Ruska tvořily vyjadřované antipatie již nadpoloviční většinu, přičemž u Ruska, které skončilo z hlediska průměrného hodnocení jako jednoznačně poslední, téměř polovinu odpovědí tvořily ty v krajní kategorii 5 ‚velmi nesympatická‘,“ konstatovali badatelé.
Z časového srovnání vyplývá, že v porovnání s koncem roku 2021, kdy se srovnatelný výzkum uskutečnil naposledy, se hodnocení prakticky u všech zemí s výjimkou Polska, které drží pozice, zhoršilo.
Zdaleka největší posun se objevil v případě Ruska, kde se průměrné hodnocení zhoršilo o více než tři čtvrtiny bodu, což zemi posunulo na poslední příčku. „Příčinou tohoto posunu je nepochybně probíhající válka na Ukrajině. Právě Ukrajina je pak spolu s USA a Maďarskem další zemí, kde se průměrné hodnocení zhoršilo o více než půl bodu. Všechny tyto země včetně Ruska jsou přitom hodnoceny výrazně hůře i v porovnání s rokem 2019, vůči kterému si v roce 2021 naopak výrazně polepšily,“ konstatují výzkumníci.
Obecně platí, že nejvřelejší vztah ze zkoumaných zemí mají čeští občané ke Slovensku, a to s poměrně velkým náskokem oproti jiným zemím. Druhé nejvyšší sympatie vyjádřili čeští občané k Rakousku. Jednoznačně převažující sympatie se objevovaly v odpovědích respondentů rovněž v případě Polska, Velké Británie, Francie a Německa.
Na hraně jsou USA. Sympatie a antipatie vůči Spojeným státům jsou v podstatě vyrovnané.
„Podrobnější analýza postojů ukázala některé sociodemografické rozdíly v postojích k jednotlivým zemím. Podle pohlaví muži vnímají Izrael příznivěji než ženy. S rostoucím věkem rostou sympatie ve vztahu k Maďarsku či Rusku a naopak klesají ve vztahu k USA, Velké Británii či Německu,“ zjistili vědci. „Se zvyšujícím se stupněm nejvyššího dokončeného vzdělání rostou sympatie k Izraeli, USA či Ukrajině a naopak klesají v případě Číny, Maďarska nebo Ruska. Se zlepšujícím se hodnocením životní úrovně vlastní domácnosti se zvyšují sympatie v případě Německa, USA a Ukrajiny a naopak klesají v případě Maďarska. Z hlediska sebezařazení na pravolevé škále politické orientace při posunu od levice k pravici rostou sympatie ve vztahu k USA, Ukrajině a Velké Británii a klesají v případě Číny a Ruska.“

В субботу, 30 декабря, обстрелу со стороны Украины подвергся российский Белгород. По данным Минобороны РФ, удар был нанесен двумя ракетами «Ольха» в кассетном снаряжении, а также реактивными снарядами РСЗО Vampire.
В Киеве заявили, что удар по Белгороду был нанесен по военным объектам «силами безопасности и обороны» Украины, а взрывы в центре российского города назвали «ошибочной работой ПВО РФ».
Общее число погибших в Белгороде, согласно местным властям, достигло 24, более 100 человек ранены. По словам губернатора Белгородской области, повреждено 30 многоквартирных домов, 381 квартира, несколько частных домов и множество машин. Некоторые украинские СМИ назвали это «ударом возмездия».
Напомним, Россия регулярно наносит удары по гражданской инфраструктуре и жилым домам в Украине. 29 декабря Россия осуществила один из крупнейших ракетных ударов по городам Украины. В результате чего погибли не менее 39 мирных жителей.

MEP Madison: Estonian, Finnish territorial waters should be restored to maximum breadth
TALLINN – Citing the threat originating from Russia, Estonian MEP Jaak Madison has sent a letter to Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, asking whether it would be possible to restore the maritime border between Estonia and Finland as per the international law of the sea, according to which the maximum breadth of a country's territorial sea is 12 nautical miles.
In the letter, Madison points out that in 1995, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, many countries had a sincere desire and belief that Russia was about to become a well-wishing neighbor with whom friendly relations could be developed.
"Although it was a largely naive belief, out of step with the long experience of previous centuries, it was still a humanly understandable belief. One of the signs of this goodwill and belief was the agreement between Estonia and Finland, whereby both countries moved their maritime borders three nautical miles closer to their coasts to create a six nautical mile wide corridor of international waters," the MEP said.
According to Madison, the main beneficiary of this move was Russia, for which access to the Baltic Sea opened up without Russia having to ask for permission to move its warships through the Gulf of Finland.
"Unfortunately, in the situation of war, Russia has begun to take much greater advantage of the benefit of international waters, for example, to maintain a connection between the mainland and Kaliningrad and to move naval assets between the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the Black Sea. Russian military and state ships alike now sail in the six-mile-wide canal in the Gulf of Finland without transponders, as do its planes, often creating dangerous situations, since in poor visibility it is not possible to spot a ship or plane without a transponder early enough," Madison said.
Furthermore, to avoid entering the territorial waters of Estonia or Finland, Russian ships often move in the oncoming traffic portion of the shipping lane, thereby increasing the risk of collision even more, the MEP added.

On December 6, it was announced with much fanfare that the 10/7 Project, a new “centralized communications operation to promote continued US bipartisan support for Israel; push for accurate, complete coverage of the Israel-Hamas war,” and achieve a “stronger” media “focus” on the victims of October 7’s Al-Aqsa Flood would be launched, by a quintet of the largest Israeli lobby groups on U.S. soil.
Who and what is funding the 10/7 Project isn’t at all clear. Publicity material spoke vaguely of an unnamed “coterie of philanthropists” and the organization’s interest in sourcing “more philanthropic support” moving forward. Future formal financial disclosures may make for fascinating reading, but its founders offer some clues.
The five comprise the American Jewish Committee (AJC), the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations. This is quite the rogue’s gallery of Zionist entities, several of which have deplorable track records of actively whitewashing, if not outright facilitating, Israeli apartheid propaganda activities that have become turbocharged since October 7.
As such, the 10/7 Project’s professed mission of countering “disinformation” about October 7 and “Israel’s response” to the events can only be considered highly disquieting, especially given its target audience is “key media and government influencers.” In reality, of course, the organization is just the latest salvo in the Zionist state’s long-running information war against Palestinians and the Western world. This pitched battle has recently become ever more treacherous, specifically due to Tel Aviv’s genocidal “response” to Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
One could be forgiven for thinking the 10/7 Project had already floundered in its objectives. After an initial ripple of mainstream interest, primarily from Israeli outlets and Zionist news platforms, the organization has seemingly vanished without a trace from the media landscape – or at least, its name has. As we shall see, though, it’s evident that in the manner of an iceberg, the 10/7 Project’s public footprint represents but the visible tip of something far larger and considerably more destructive.
‘STRANGLEHOLD ON CONGRESS’
While the 10/7 Project may not be directly making headlines daily, its parent organizations certainly are. The ADL has since October 7 published a steady stream of reports, lapped up by the media largely without question, testifying to an explosion of “anti-Semitic incidents” across the Western world in the wake of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.
Shocking stuff, one might think. Yet, as an investigation by MintPress News Senior Staff Writer Alan MacLeod revealed, the ADL is producing such staggering figures by categorizing anti-Israel and pro-Palestine rallies and corresponding chants at both as individual “anti-Semitic incidents.” Despite the exposure of its embarrassing, Enron-style accounting, the League continues to pump out the same bogus “research” at regular intervals. On December 12, it claimed “anti-Semitism” in the US was now up 337% in the wake of October 7, “an all-time record.”
It is far from the first time ADL definitions of anti-Semitism have failed to pass muster. For example, in December 2022, The Grayzone’s Alex Rubinstein revealed that the League did not categorize Ukraine’s openly Neo-Nazi paramilitary Azov Battalion to be the “far right group it once was.” This, despite the fact that Azov’s mission to “lead the white races of the world in a final crusade…against Semite-led Untermenschen,” as articulated by founder Andriy Biletsky, remains unchanged.
Meanwhile, the infamous AIPAC – accurately described by U.S. political scientist John Mearsheimer as “a de facto agent for a foreign government, [with] a stranglehold on Congress” – has made clear its significantly intensified mission to rid Washington DC of any elected official possessed of even vaguely anti-war, pro-Palestinian views, by declaring war on lawmakers such as Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar.
When AIPAC moves against, or in favor, of particular politicians, they mean business – and depressingly, the organization usually wins. Annually, the organization publishes a report on its “policy and political achievements” that year. Its 2022 installment boasts, among other things, of bagging $3.3 billion “for security assistance to Israel, with no added conditions” and having gifted $17.5 million – the most of any U.S. PAC – to “pro-Israel candidates,” 98% of whom won their elections, in the process defeating 13 anti-Israel challengers.
CONFLICTS OF INTEREST
The official website of the 10/7 Project is spartan in the extreme. Visitors are offered a “contact us” form, a link to subscribe to its regular newsletter, and a “what we do” section listing purported activities. This includes informing the public “with credible, real-time information about events in Israel and Gaza,” highlighting “excellent reporting,” calling out “biased coverage,” holding “biased media accountable,” and offering “expert spokespeople for press and broadcast outlets.”
Unmentioned anywhere is that the 10/7 Project is represented by a trio of notorious PR and political consultancies – CKR Solutions, OnMessage Public Strategies, and SKDK. Together, they move in the shadows to advance the organization’s interests and messaging publicly and on Capitol Hill. SKDK’s contribution will inevitably be the most insidious and impactful.
Since its founding in 2004, the company has careened from damaging scandal to damaging scandal yet consistently secures major, big-ticket clients. The reason for this is clear. SKDK was founded by and employs a retinue of high-ranking, well-connected Democratic operatives. Among them is Anita Dunn, Barack Obama’s White. House Communications Director, credited as the “mastermind” of Joe Biden’s 2020 election win and widely regarded as a key member of the President’s “inner circle.”
Ever since Obama’s 2008 election win, SKDK has been plausibly accused of selling privileged access to the White House to clients despite failing to register as a lobbying firm. This means major corporations have a direct means of encouraging – and bribing – the Oval Office to offer tax breaks, shred regulations, dump legislation, smash unions, and generally harm the U.S. public interest with total impunity and in absolute secrecy.
SKDK’s expansive Rolodex also helps politicians get out of serious trouble. In 2018-2019, Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan paid the company $200,000 for “crisis communications” assistance after one of his campaign workers sued him for harming her professionally when she complained of sexual harassment by one of his top aides. Meanwhile, in August 2021, it was revealed a senior SKDK staffer personally intervened to suppress negative media coverage of sexual harassment allegations against New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
Even more perversely, it’s since been revealed that at the same time, SKDK was advising Madigan on how to navigate his public controversy, the company was also helping his former campaign worker bring a lawsuit against the aide who’d sexually harassed her. A more perfect demonstration of the DC blob’s incestuous nature and SKDK’s total lack of ethical and professional scruples one would be hard-pressed to find. And both are highly competitive categories.
SKDK played a pivotal role in Biden’s 2020 presidential bid, decisively reversing his fortunes after abysmal performances in various caucuses. While the mainstream media primarily praised the miraculous work of the company and Dunn – his de facto campaign director – there has also been fierce controversy surrounding its electioneering activities. For example, SKDK fired off daily “Misinformation Briefings” to major tech and social media firms, including Google, Meta and Twitter, requesting that specific content be suppressed or removed.
In most cases, the recipients complied, meaning SKDK exerted extraordinary influence over what voters did and did not know and could and could not see during the controversial 2020 Presidential election. Which surely at least partially accounts for Biden’s victory. To make matters even worse, the company was simultaneously. reaping a $35 million windfall from the government of California by running the state’s supposedly bipartisan “get-out-the-vote” campaign. The contract, originally to be financed by local taxpayers, was mysteriously awarded to SKDK on a “no-bid” basis.
‘DICTATE TERMS’
Clearly, the 10/7 Project was intended to be a very public affair. In an early promotional interview, executive director Josh Isay – perhaps unsurprisingly, until August 2022 SKDK’s longtime CEO – boasted about the “widespread enthusiasm” with which the organization’s “efforts to set the record straight and combat misinformation spouted by Hamas terrorists and their anti-Israel allies” had so far been received:
We look forward to continuing to do the critically important work of providing policymakers and the American public with reliable information about Israel and Hamas, and uplifting the stories of the innocent victims of the October 7th massacre.”
Yet, there is no obvious sign of those ambitions bearing fruit to date. A partial explanation for this failure may lie in the 10/7 Project’s wish to transform the “innocent victims” of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood into human interest stories and atrocity propaganda while elevating the organization’s eponymous date to the position of 9/11 in the American public’s mind.
In the weeks since the 10/7 Project’s inception, it has become ever-increasingly clear the Zionist narrative of what unfolded when Hamas breached Gaza’s armored concentration camp walls – unquestioningly regurgitated over and again for weeks after that by the Western media – is completely and grotesquely fraudulent.
For example, on December 15, it was reported based on social security data that Tel Aviv’s claim that 1,200 civilians died in the initial assault was greatly exaggerated. In reality, just 695 lost their lives. The previous figure was itself a revision from an initial civilian casualty “estimate” of 1,400.
Every civilian death in a warzone is an extremely grave crime. It is surely for this reason that Tel Aviv on December 12 desperately argued “it would not be morally sound” to investigate “friendly fire” incidents in “kibbutzim and southern Israeli communities” during Operation Al Aqsa Flood – civilians killed by Israeli Occupation Forces. Nonetheless, the numbers involved are avowedly “immense.”
Among the “stories of the innocent victims of the October 7th massacre” selected by the 10/7 Project for public “uplifting” in service of whitewashing and justifying the Gaza genocide will have been a great many individuals slaughtered in cold blood by indiscriminate, excessively violent IDF actions. This is all but inevitable. Urgently casting those victims into obscurity while ensuring the entire issue of Zionist “friendly fire” is not examined is now of paramount importance.
More significantly, though, the exposure – and occasional admission – of Tel Aviv’s brazen lies has fundamentally shifted mainstream narratives and sympathies away from Israel and towards the Palestinians. Audiences of every extraction globally can witness the monstrous reality of the genocide in Gaza and learn of Zionist abuse of the Palestinians even before the colonial entity’s founding in 1948 with their own eyes and ears.
Israeli deceit has been so relentless and so readily exposed that even typically subservient Western news networks and their featured pundits are treating official claims with enormous skepticism. Similarly, Zionist violence is so constantly unremitting and wantonly sadistic that graphic reports of carpet bombs maiming and slaughtering every generation of Palestinians are now commonplace.
Meanwhile, developments such as the revelation that IDF soldiers killed three shirtless Israelis waving a white flag, speaking Hebrew and seeking their assistance have traveled widely, in turn highlighting prior examples of identical “peacetime” atrocities inflicted upon Palestinians. By contrast, there has to date been no “misinformation spouted by Hamas terrorists and their anti-Israel allies” to combat at all.
A LOSING BATTLE
As a result, the 10/7 Project and its founders are placed in the invidious position of having to publicly defend the indefensible – namely, a modern-day genocide unfolding on television screens and front page headlines the world over. In such circumstances, overt and unashamed advocacy work is best conducted behind the scenes. Yet, it is precisely in this context that the 10/7 Project may be most dangerous and potent due to its open-door Oval Office access.
Tireless solidarity efforts by European activists, protesters, citizen journalists, and civil society organizations have produced significant results. Paris went from mulling legislation criminalizing anti-Zionism in November to now leading global pressure for a ceasefire. Multiple governments and opposition leaders are likewise changing their tune. Senior British officials openly warn Netanyahu to drastically rein in his unquenchable bloodlust if he wishes to retain any international support.
Stateside, however, while the crusading work of grassroots pro-Palestine voices and groups has been redoubtable, the Biden administration’s commitment to facilitating, encouraging, and exacerbating the Gaza genocide, however it can, remains undimmed. While the President has demanded Netanyahu’s slaughter be wrapped up by the new year, there is no indication material, financial, and diplomatic support upon which the new Nakba depends is being curtailed. The strikes marked the first U.S. military response to what has been a persistent campaign of drone and missile attacks on commercial ships since the start of the Israel-Hamas war. And the coordinated military assault comes just a week after the White House and a host of partner nations issued a final warning to the Houthis to cease the attacks or face potential military action. The officials confirmed the strikes on condition of anonymity to discuss military operations. Members of Congress were briefed earlier Thursday on the strike plans.
The warning appeared to have had at least some short-lived impact, as attacks stopped for several days. On Tuesday, however, the Houthi rebels fired their largest-ever barrage of drones and missiles targeting shipping in the Red Sea, with U.S. and British ships and American fighter jets responding by shooting down 18 drones, two cruise missiles and an anti-ship missile. And on Thursday, the Houthis fired an anti-ship ballistic missile into the Gulf of Aden, which was seen by a commercial ship but did not hit the ship.
The rebels, who have carried out 27 attacks involving dozens of drones and missiles just since Nov. 19, said Thursday that any attack by American forces on its sites in Yemen will spark a fierce military response.
“The response to any American attack will not only be at the level of the operation that was recently carried out with more than 24 drones and several missiles,” said Abdel Malek al-Houthi, the group’s supreme leader, during an hour-long speech. “It will be greater than that.”
The Houthis say their assaults are aimed at stopping Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. But their targets increasingly have little or no connection to Israel and imperil a crucial trade route linking Asia and the Middle East with Europe.
Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council passed a resolution Wednesday that demanded the Houthis immediately cease the attacks and implicitly condemned their weapons supplier, Iran. It was approved by a vote of 11-0 with four abstentions — by Russia, China, Algeria and Mozambique.
Britain’s participation in the strikes underscored the Biden administration’s effort to use a broad international coalition to battle the Houthis, rather than appear to be going it alone. More than 20 nations are already participating in a U.S.-led maritime mission to increase ship protection in the Red Sea.
U.S. officials for weeks had declined to signal when international patience would run out and they would strike back at the Houthis, even as multiple commercial vessels were struck by missiles and drones, prompting companies to look at rerouting their ships.
On Wednesday, however, U.S. officials again warned of consequences.
“I’m not going to telegraph or preview anything that might happen,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters during a stop in Bahrain. He said the U.S. has made clear “that if this continues as it did yesterday, there will be consequences. And I’m going to leave it at that.”
The Biden administration’s reluctance over the past several months to retaliate reflected political sensitivities and stemmed largely from broader worries about upending the shaky truce in Yemen and triggering a wider conflict in the region. The White House wants to preserve the truce and has been wary of taking action in Yemen that could open up another war front.

КСИР не первый раз наносит удары (https://t.me/readovkanews/72458) по американским базам в Сирии и Ираке, но по большей части раньше речь шла об использовании всевозможных прокси. Последнее крупное нападение на американцев, за которое иранские власти взяли на себя ответственность, произошло в начале 2020 года — тогда КСИР мстил за убитого в Багдаде генерала Касема Сулеймани.
Тогда для американцев (по официальной версии) всё обошлось без жертв, а Тегеран ограничился заявлением, что это была «пощёчина США». Трамп так же не пошёл на эскалацию и «утёрся».
В этот раз, несмотря на некоторые общие черты, всё иначе.
Во-первых, если за убийство Сулеймани американцы взяли на себя ответственность, то вот за теракт в Кермане (в годовщину гибели иранского генерала) — нет. Якобы во всём были виноваты недобитые исламисты, вот только у иранцев, видимо, иное мнение по этому поводу.
А, во-вторых, если удар 2020 года был скорее демонстрацией и жестом, то в этот раз под раздачу попал один из крупнейших разведывательных центров США в регионе. Пока не известно были ли жертвы среди персонала американского «консульства», но, судя по имеющимся кадрам, здание фактически разрушено.
Это уже не просто жест.
Учитывая продолжающийся конфликт в Газе и напряжённость в Красном море, американцы не могут просто сделать вид, что «потерь нет» и грозно поводить желваками — необходима жёсткая реакция.

Am Ende durfte Alexander Buchmann von der Pressestelle lediglich den Satz verkünden: "Die Umgestaltung der Erinnerungsstätte für die Opfer der Luftangriffe des 13. und 14. Februar 1945 geschieht planmäßig. Zu weiteren Details informieren wir morgen." Planmäßig? Dann müsste es ja ein Konzept, vielleicht gar einen Wettbewerb für einen neu gestalteten Erinnerungsort auf dem Altmarkt gegeben haben? Wir fragen nach. Im Rathaus herrscht Schweigen. Irritationen in Dresden: Gedenkschrift für Opfer der Luftangriffe „professionell“ entfernt

Auf dem Dresdner Altmarkt wurden folgende in eine Bank aus Sandstein eingemeißelte Sätze der Erinnerungskultur plangeschliffen und damit entfernt:
„Dies ist ein Ort der Mahnung, des Erinnerns und Gedenkens. Hier wurden die Leichname tausender Opfer der Luftangriffe des 13. und 14. Februar 1945 verbrannt. Damals kehrte der Schrecken des Krieges, von Deutschland aus in alle Welt getragen, auch in unsere Stadt zurück.“
Ein X-User namens „Team Sotogrande“ meldete dazu am Vormittag als einer der Ersten:
„Inschrift auf dem Dresdner Altmarkt geschliffen! Zunächst dachten wir, es sei eine Falschmeldung. Doch heute früh wurde die Tatsache von einem Dresdner bestätigt. Am Altmarkt wurde die Inschrift zum Gedenken an die Opfer der Luftangriffe geschliffen. Vor Ort kann man noch Reste von Schleifstaub und die Füße einer Baustellenabsprerrung erkennen. Die Inschrift wurde 2009 zunächst mit einer Tafel angebracht, später dann in den Sandstein gemeißelt.“
Epoch Times sprach am frühen Nachmittag mit der Pressestelle der Stadt, die von einem hohen Nachfrageaufkommen berichtete, am späteren Nachmittag werde die Stadt dazu eine Pressemitteilung herausgeben. Eine Sprecherin bestätigte, dass die Inschrift tatsächlich „professionell“ entfernt wurde. Aber für nähere Angaben sei die Pressemeldung abzuwarten.
Auch die Polizei sitzt ratlos über vielen Anfragen
Ein Sprecher der Polizei Dresden kann auch nur bestätigen, dass die Inschrift nun fehle, aber auch die behördenübergreifende Kommunikation mit der Stadt habe keine Hinweise ergeben, wer da nun die Inschrift – wie und warum – entfernt hat, eine Anzeige liege bisher jedenfalls noch nicht vor.

Ein von Epoch Times kontaktierter Dresdner Steinmetz kann keine Auskunft geben, er weiß auch von keinem Steinmetz, der von der Stadt bevorzugt für solche Jobs ausgewählt werde, da gebe es üblicherweise Ausschreibungen. Eine Onlinerecherche zu solchen Ausschreibungen ergibt keinen Treffer.
Am späten Nachmittag dann schickt ein Sprecher der Stadt anstelle der angekündigten Pressemitteilung eine schmale Notiz per E-Mail an die Redaktion mit folgendem Wortlaut:
„Die Umgestaltung der Erinnerungsstätte für die Opfer der Luftangriffe des 13. und 14. Februar 1945 geschieht planmäßig. Zu weiteren Details informieren wir morgen.“
FDP-Stadtrat hat kein Verständnis für die Verwaltung
FDP-Stadtrat Holger Hase befasst sich seit Jahrzehnten mit der Erinnerungskultur seiner Stadt. Auch er war vollkommen überrascht von der Entfernung. Hase hat sich sogleich um Informationen bei der Kulturverwaltung bemüht, aber keine bekommen:
Man wusste nichts Näheres bis hin zur Sitzung des Ältestenrates, der auch heute tagte, aber ebenfalls keine Informationen über die Vorgänge hatte.“
Hase hat kein Verständnis für die Hilflosigkeit der Verwaltung, die nicht sagen kann, wer hier was angeordnet hätte, „denn wenn etwas angeordnet wird, dann kostet es ja Geld.“ Er könne sich auch nicht vorstellen, dass das einfach aus der Verwaltung heraus passiert: „Bei solchen Vorhaben zur Erinnerungskultur hat die Verwaltung noch nie von sich aus eine Initiative unternommen, sondern der Anstoß kam immer aus der Politik.“ Dass hier etwas „planmäßig“ passiert sei, ist für Hase „völliger Unsinn.“
Epoch Times möchte abschließend noch wissen, was der Stadtrat denn jetzt für eine Erklärung für die Entfernung habe. Radikale von links oder rechts schließt er aus, sagt Hase, das sei handwerklich unbemerkt – zumal im Herzen der Stadt nicht zu bewerkstelligen. Allerdings hätte es dort Bauarbeiten gegeben, möglicherweise gab es aus „Dussel“ eine Beschädigung, die nun ausgebügelt werden sollte. Aber so ein „Unfall“ widerspräche wiederum der von der Stadt behaupteten Planmäßigkeit.
Sollte die Stadt Dresden morgen eine Erklärung veröffentlichen, wird Epoch Times darüber informieren.
